What does a typical day look like for a Home Support North support worker? The truth is, there is no “typical” day. From the morning sunrise to the evening quiet, our team is out in the Northland community ensuring our clients live with dignity, safety, and a bit of joy.
Follow along for a glimpse into a Tuesday in the life of Sarah, one of our dedicated support workers.
8:30 AM – The Morning Refresh (Personal Care)
The day begins with Margaret. Margaret lives independently but needs a helping hand with her morning routine. Sarah assists her with a safe, dignified shower and helps her get dressed for the day.
- The Difference: Beyond just the physical help, this is a time for a chat. “It’s about making Margaret feel refreshed and ready to face the day with confidence,” says Sarah.
10:30 AM – The Essential Safety Check
Next, Sarah visits Mr. Williams. His family lives in Auckland and relies on us to be their “eyes and ears.” This visit is a scheduled safety check. Sarah checks that his medical alarm is within reach, ensures there are no new trip hazards, she is also able to remind him about his morning medications.
- The Difference: This visit provides peace of mind for the whole family, knowing someone local is looking out for Dad.
12:00 PM – A break for lunch
Sarah has a 2 hour break between her clients, which allows her to head to a nearby park and eat her lunch under a shady tree, one of her favorite ways to relax. She also enjoys running a few errands in between clients.
- The Difference: Breaks in the day give Sarah a change to charge her own battery and she can continue to give her best self to her clients. .
1:30 PM – Errands & The Weekly Shop
After lunch, it’s off to the supermarket with Mrs. G. While some clients prefer we shop for them, Mrs. G loves to come along. Sarah drives her to the shops, helps her navigate the aisles, and carries the heavy bags inside once they get home.
- The Difference: This isn’t just a chore; it’s a social outing that keeps Mrs. G connected to her community.
3:30 PM – A Private Adventure: To the Coast
In the afternoon, Sarah meets James, a private client who has requested companionship services. Today, the weather is too good to miss, so they head out to Ruakākā Beach. They find a bench overlooking the waves, enjoy a thermos of tea, and watch the surf.
- The Difference: Our private-pay services allow for that extra time. For James, this hour at the beach is the highlight of his week—a moment of pure relaxation and fresh air.
7:00 PM – The Evening Check
The day ends as it began—with safety. Sarah does one last “tuck-in” check for Hine, who lives alone. She makes sure the doors are locked, the heaters are set correctly for a chilly Northland night, and Hine has her phone nearby.
- The Difference: A 15-minute check-in can be the difference between a restless night and a peaceful one.
