Nau mai, haere mai! As we move further into this election year, staying informed about how to make your voice heard is essential. Voting is one of the most powerful ways to shape the decisions affecting our healthcare, local communities, and support services across Te Tai Tokerau.
To help you get prepared, we are sharing key updates from Te Kaitiaki Take Kōwhiri (The Electoral Commission) so you know what to expect and how to make sure you are ready to vote.
📬 What to Look Out For in Your Mailbox
Things are working a little differently for the 2026 General Election. You need to be enrolled before voting starts.
Throughout August, the Electoral Commission is posting out enrolment update packs to more than 3.6 million New Zealanders. When yours arrives in the letterbox, take a quick moment to open it up and check that all your details—especially your current home address—are correct.
If your local electorate boundaries have shifted recently, your update letter will also confirm which electorate you belong to for this election.
Why Your Address Matters
If you don’t receive an enrolment pack in August, it usually means you aren’t enrolled yet, or the Electoral Commission has an old address on file.
When letters get sent to a previous home, they are returned, which can result in your name being placed on the “dormant roll.” If you receive your mail at a PO Box or a different address from where you live, make sure to let them know both your physical and postal addresses.
🗓️ Important Dates to Mark on Your Calendar
- By 4 October: Enrol or update your details by this date to make sure you receive an EasyVote card. Your EasyVote card makes voting much faster and simpler on the day. (If you’ve provided an email address, your card will be emailed to you; otherwise, it will arrive by post. Don’t worry—you can still vote without one!)
- Sunday, 25 October (Midnight): The absolute deadline to enrol to vote.
- Monday, 26 October: Advance voting opens!
- Saturday, 7 November: Election Day.
💻 Easy Ways to Check, Enrol, or Update
You don’t need to leave the comfort of your home to sort out your voting details:
- Online: Visit vote.nz to check your enrolment, update your details, or sign up for the first time.
- Over the Phone: Call the friendly team on freephone 0800 36 76 56.
📱 Keep an Eye Out for Texts and Emails
To help everyone stay updated, you may receive text messages (from number 5101) or emails (from no-reply@easy.vote.nz) reminding you to check your details.
A Safety Reminder: The Electoral Commission will never ask you for a password, PIN, or bank/login details. You do not need any of these to enrol or vote.

- Accessible Formats: Information is available in large print, Easy Read, and audio formats.
- Languages: Enrolment information is provided in English, te reo Māori, and 29 other languages.
